We appointed Matthew Hollingsworth of Spirit Architecture as our architect for
there-ordering of Holy Ascension Church, after a competitive bidding process in 2010.
At that time he had not carried out any similar sized church commission but we
felt that his skills and enthusiasm would produce the right result, and we were not
The project involved a complete reorganisation of the nave and aisles, including new
heating, lighting and sound systems, together with a new WC and an office, created
from the existing Vestry. The church was built in 1852 and is listed Grade II.
Matthew took the project from an initial sketch design by the client to an agreed
scheme and saw it through all the approval stages with the Diocesan and Planning
authorities. He produced all the necessary drawings and specifications and agreed
the project cost with us (overall £300,000). He supervised the tender stage and the
construction process over a seven month period.
The building work was kept to the set time and cost parameters and the building was
opened by the Bishop of Gloucester in May 2012.
Since then he has managed the 12 month Defects Liability Period and agreed the
final account with the contractor. There were difficulties with the heating system
and with the sub-contractor in the first winter but Matthew steered us through this
to an acceptable solution.
We have been very pleased with the end result and have no hesitation in
recommending him. – Richard Faircliff BA (Arch) RIBA. Project Manager EVCC.
We engaged Spirit of Architecture to design and manage the extension of our home to create living space for myself as a single person and my son and daughter-in-law and grandchildren with plenty of accommodation suited to our different needs. The result has been a joy to live in and good to look at, the extension blends in as an integral part of the house and does not look as if it is just as an ‘add-on’ Matthew Hollingsworth is great to work with to develop ideas and make them into a workable design. – Dee Taylor
